12 New TV Characters We Can't Wait To Meet In 2017

9. Archmaester - Game Of Thrones

Although we finally know when Game of Thrones Season 7 is arriving - and incase you've been living in the Red Waste, it's July 16! - we don't know too much about the new characters coming this year.

We've had vague descriptions for characters like 'Young Lord', 'City Guard', and 'General'. The only high-profile casting, though, is the great Jim Broadbent, who recently confirmed that he is playing an Archmaester in the upcoming season, and appearing in five of the seven episodes.

The reveal came from the man himself, with the actor telling ScreenCrush: "I’m a Maester, an Archmaester. I’m an old professor character." He also noted that his character will be appearing alongside Samwell Tarly, confirming he'll be at the Citadel.

That leaves a couple of possibilities for who exactly he'll be. One (and the most exciting) is that he's Marywn the Mage, an Archmaester with a particular interest in magic, and someone who knows of the existence of dragons. In Maester terms, he's more of a Qyburn than an Aemon, but potentially holds a lot of important knowledge.

The other is Ebrose, an Archmaester who specialises in healing, which could play into Jorah's storyline. Alternatively, he might be an amalgamation of these, like Ian McShane's Elder Brother/Septon Meribald last year. Either way, seeing Broadbent in Westeros, and maybe as Marywn too, is very exciting.
