12 Small Details You Only Notice Rewatching Gilmore Girls

6. Luke's Cap

Gilmore Girls
The WB

Luke Danes is a man who marches to the beat of his own drum – does what he wants, thinks what ever he wants, wears what ever he wants and never cares what anyone may think of him (although he's not impulsive about it, unlike some of the other Stars Hollow inhabitants). And one of his most prominent characteristics is wearing a cap almost all of the time, even during working hours.

The reason for Luke’s cap is actually a callback to Scott Patterson’s career as a baseball player, before he went into acting. Patterson was a professional pitcher in minor league baseball, playing in the sport from 1980 to 1986. Scott never played at a major league level. The show further referenced Patterson's previous years when Luke and Dean played baseball together.

Moreover, Luke's blue cap could be interpreted as a motif for his love for Lorelai. As it was the one she gifted him back in season one, the blue cap may symbolise his undying affection for her. After their engagement is called off at the end of season six, he temporarily wears a black one, before switching back to the classic navy one.
