12 TV Families Ranked From Worst To Best

1. The Pritchetts/Dunphys/Tuckers €“ Modern Family

Lastly and perhaps unsurprisingly are the motley crew from ABC's hit mockumentary, Modern Family. Of all the families ever to grace our screens over the years, the Pritchetts/Dunphys/Tuckers are arguably the most diverse in television history. We have a sexagenarian business owner married to a fiery Columbian half his age with two sons including one from her previous marriage, a former stay-at-home Mom battling her three adolescent children with her cheerleader-cum-realtor husband and a gay lawyer who shares an apartment with his larger than life boyfriend and their adopted Vietnamese daughter. All in all there are three family units to fit into a twenty minute segment and there's enough material to make a separate entry for each of them, but to be honest the best thing about Modern Family is the way the whole bunch interact together. Instead of allowing episodes to become an over-crowded free-for-all, the writers at ABC juggle their ensemble cast beautifully to ensure no screen time is taken up by one person more than another. Every character, whether it's Phil the doofus Dad or Manny the hopeless romantic is given enough room to let their personality shine (apart from Lily, who delivers all her lines in a manner that makes Star Trek's Data look like Hamlet) which enables the audience to relate to them and the hilarious situations they get themselves into. I'm sure we've all debated the best way to go about telling someone we love that their new outfit is hideously unflattering, just as we'll look back in fondness at the chaos that ensues when everyone gets together for a special occasion. Watching those scenes play out every week makes for a very pleasurable viewing experience. Of course no family is 100% perfect and Jay in particular has learned to accept his son's life with Cam over time. In spite of their cultural or ideological differences, you can always count on the Pritchetts to provide love, support and respect when it matters most €“ who could ask for anything more?
