9. Star Trek: Lower Decks

Star Trek's mantra has always been about the intrepid spirit of Starfleet, bolding going, discovering new worlds and new civilizations, saving existence... you know, all of those grand sci-fi considerations that make for the best drama. Lovers, fighters, killers, explorers.

What we've always been less fascinated by in this world are the dog's bodies and it's been mostly by design. The main crew of the ships/stations in Star Trek shows have always been remarkably small considering the scope of their jobs and everyone else on board was always counted as mostly expendable. They represented a Thing to be saved, more than actual people. And as a further mark of how little lesser beings on board mattered, the whole Red Shirt thing confirmed they'd only be trotted out to be killed.

But now we're getting a whole show dedicated to the little guys, which is an interesting idea without really fitting the tone of Star Trek. But hey, if a comedy show about "the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships" set a year after Star Trek: Nemesis, works, it could establish bold new directions for Star Trek to go in. Boldly.
