13 Darkest Star Trek: The Original Series Moments

10. Rayna's Fate In Requiem For Methuselah

Star Trek The Original Series
CBS

While on the planet Holberg 917G, Kirk, Spock, and McCoy encounter the reclusive billionaire Flint and his young ward Rayna. While Flint claims that Rayna is the daughter of two of his employees who died in a tragic accident, the truth is far more chilling. The beautiful and intelligent Rayna is an android, a companion Flint created to ease his loneliness. But since Rayna is falling in love with Kirk, Flint is trying everything to get him out of the way.

Rayna is horrified by everything Flint has done and tries to break free of her android programming. But free will is a new concept to her artificial brain, and she cannot choose between Flint and Kirk. This conflict short-circuits her brain and ultimately kills her. Rayna may have been an android, but her death cut as deeply as a human's.
