The Horrible Life Lesson: Appeasing your friends is more important than getting what you wanted (and paid for).

Supposedly the embodiment of generosity, Rarity appears to have but one purpose: dramatically telling her friends how to dress. Her particular brand of faux generosity pops up often, but first receives its own full episode in Suited For Success.

Leading up to the Grand Galloping Gala, Rarity decides to make formal gowns for each of her friends. They don't like the end results and request alterations. Many adult fans remember this scene for its meme-friendly "20% cooler" line, but a far more important line follows shortly after this one: "Make sure that it stays within our budget."

After the dresses flop at a fashion show attended by Canterlot's fashion elite, the Mane Six decide to wear the dresses that Rarity originally made for an impromptu private showing. In her letter to Princess Celestia, Twilight Sparkle discusses the Mane Six's reactions to the original dresses before making an easy pun about never looking a gift horse in the mouth.

Well hold your gift horses right there, Twilight, because that's not what happened. Yes, the Mane Six could have shown more gratitude for the dresses they hated. But why is this seen as ingratitude for an act of generosity? We learned through song that Rarity was not just making dresses for friends but rather performing a job for paying clients. They have the right to the dresses they requested, regardless of how anypony else feels about their designs.
