11. The Red Road 27th February, Sundance Channel
The Sundance Channel is positioning itself as a challenger to HBO and AMC, and if the teaser for The Red Road is anything to go by, it could have just put itself on a par with the Big Two of quality US drama. Starring Game of Thrones' Jason Mamoa and the New Zealand actor Martin Henderson, the miniseries focuses on the tensions between a small town community and the Ramapo Mountain Indians. The Sheriff (Henderson) is forced to form an alliance with a member of the tribe who has a criminal past (Mamoa) after his wife (Julianne Nicholson), a recovering alcoholic, is implicated in a tragedy. It has all the hallmarks of a dark and twisty series, but one which puts its characters first. In other words, it's exactly what we're looking for.
