13 Problems Only Game Of Thrones Fans Will Understand
13. You Demand Trial By Combat In Real Life
How are disputes generally solved in the real world? If you do something seriously wrong, you can expect to go to court, face a (hopefully) fair trial, and then receive a sentencing. In theory that does exist in Westeros too, however nothing is ever settled by jury. Instead, it's TRIAL. BY. COMBAT. Thanks to the show, disagreements between friends are no longer sorted out with a frank discussion and a shaking of hands. No, you demand a trial by combat. Ok, it may never actually happen, or never get beyond a thumb-war, but it's still fun to say. Now, one man in America (where else?) has taken it to the next level, by legally demanding a TBC. Richard Luthmann, a Staten Island lawyer, is facing accusations that he aided a client in committing fraud. According to Luthmann such trials were introduced around the 11th century, and have never actually been outlawed. The court filing reads: "Defendant invokes the common law writ of right and demands his common law right to Trial By Combat as against plaintiffs and their counsel, whom plaintiff wishes to implead into the Trial By Combat by writ of right." If it's allowed, I suggest not choosing anyone from Dorne as your champion.
NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far.
A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
