11. Big Mouth - The Depression Kitty

BoJack Horseman Don't Stop Dancing
Netflix

The Depression Kitty has a fairly short stay in Big Mouth Season 2, but many fans are hoping it returns for a larger role when Season 3 drops. While there were some wonderful flashes of creativity with this character, the show didn’t go to the extremes it’s known for, but perhaps that’s because they’re holding her back.

Jessi developing depression after her parents separate was well paced and a bold direction for the show. Having done an educational episode on Planned Parenthood, the show is definitely not risk-averse. And with its unflinching look at puberty, it’s natural that mental illnesses, especially one as common as depression, came to the forefront.

The Depression Kitty first appears as an ominous shadow wrapping Jessi up in its arms, and that seemed like the perfect portrayal of the illness. Having it sleep on Jessi as a huge weight that made it impossible for her to get out of bed was also a wonderful way to show the symptoms without appearing preachy.

The way Jessi was able to shake it off was far too unrealistic and cheap, however. But if the Kitty returns stronger next season, all will be forgiven.
