11. Spaced
Channel 4Spaced combines the uncertainty and imbalance that surrounds most young adults with a charming togetherness and lust for adventure. Sprinkle a subtle geeky movie reference or a video game parody into the mix and the result is a very carefully crafted blend of both authenticity and surrealism all within many short scenes. While of course Simon Pegg and Jessica Stevensons writing skills are seemingly impeccable, the sitcoms white knight is arguably the shows director Edgar Wright. Spaceds courageous sharp cuts, hilarious flashbacks and pinpoint lighting gives the sitcom a refining originality - not to mention, Wrights innovative style of dramatising the most mundane of occurrences with slow motion montages. The plot of Spaced is built around the unlikely forming of self-pitying cartoonist Tim and the lazy, uninspired, wannabe-journalist Daisy, who have chosen to join forces in their desperate hunt to find a flat. The pair eventually signup to a place under the pretence that they are actually a couple; which naturally creates a whole host of hilarious slipups and eccentric lies as the series unwinds. With the shows gang of socially awkward supporting characters and perfectly executed storylines, there is no doubting Spaceds common ranking as one of the best sitcoms to come out of the UK.
