15 Best British TV Shows Of The Decade

13. Limmy's Show

Killing Eve
BBC

The best British sketch show of its generation, Limmy’s Show revamps a fading format for the internet era. The Scottish comedian and author has a distinctive voice and an uncompromising style - this is a real auteur job, with writing, directing, and starring duties all taken on by Brian Limond, AKA Limmy.

Sketch comedy tends to live and die on its recurring characters, and Limmy’s Show has some beauties, from acid tragedy Dee Dee to call in show host Falcolnhoof to Limmy himself, who frequently interrupts the flow to ruminate on elements of modern society that wind him up.

As a style, sketch comedy has a tendency to age badly, with even the most revered of 90s shows having elements that are unwatchable to a 2019 audience. Limmy avoids this by eschewing celebrity impersonations and refraining from running catchphrases into the ground. Nothing about Limmy’s Show is dashed off or pandering to a mass crowd: it’s a singular vision, lovingly crafted and expertly presented.

Limmy’s Show is a textbook cult proposition, and there’ll be many viewers who can’t vibe with its particular style, which often utilises anti-comedy and veers away from the obvious punchline. But for its fans, it’s among the best comedy the UK has produced in many a year.

Limmy now plies his trade primarily as a live streamer, where the lack of time constraints allows him to dig even deeper into the heart of his humour, but for a condensed look at the talents of one of the isles’ top comedic talents, Limmy’s Show is the place to start.
