15 Best British TV Shows Of The Decade

11. Catastrophe

Killing Eve
Channel 4

The accidental pregnancy is an oft-used trope in comedy, whether for straightforward laughs (Knocked Up) or something with a little more substance (Juno). Less common is the story of what comes after the birth. This is the bedrock of Catastrophe, the winning comedy from Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney, who write and star in the story of a fling which turns into a lifelong commitment.

Playing characters named after themselves and taking inspiration from their own lives (family dramas, substance issues), Delaney and Horgan are a terrific double act. Chemistry is key in a sitcom like this, and they make a believable couple, bouncing off each other in the dramatic scenes as well as the funny ones. This is an unflinching look at a modern relationship, and all the good and bad that comes with it. The romcom is one of the most enduring genres in entertainment, and Catastrophe demonstrates why: if you have the right characters and the right couple, you don’t need high drama or special effects.

Catastrophe boasts an impressive supporting cast, from Ashley Jensen (of Extras fame) to one of Carrie Fisher’s final on screen performances, and they use them well. But ultimately, this is all about the leads. Rob and Sharon are perfectly imperfect people - they fight and make up, they get things wrong, and the show never judges them for it. For those who like their comedy grounded, relatable, and from the heart, Catastrophe is a winner.
