"What can I tell you, baby? I've always been bad."

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is often amazing when it comes to flashback episodes, and season five's Fool for Love is leaps and bounds ahead of the rest of them.

After she is injured by a lone vampire, Buffy seeks out Spike to explain how he was able to kill two Slayers in the past. Reveling in the attention, Spike wastes no time in recounting his sordid tale as a vampire - how he came to be, how he killed alongside Angel, and how he became one of the most feared vampires of all time.

It's admittedly a tragic tale, as before he was sired by Drusilla Spike was actually "William", a hopeless romantic poet who enjoys his optimistic approach to life. When rejected by the woman of his dreams, he finds himself bitten and turned into a vampire, and comes to enjoy his new existence and its violent adventures.

Finally learning where Spike came from and how he received his reputation is great to see and a long time coming, but despite the wait it doesn't disappoint, and manages to make the vampire both endearing and threatening all at once. You know he's evil, but you also know he can be so much more.
