3. Legendaddy (Season 6, Episode 19)
"If you were gonna be some lame suburban dad, why couldn't you have been that for me?"
Oh, Barney. Always the cocky, lucky, narcissistic ladies man. Except, that's unfair, because as this episode perfectly demonstrates, Barney is much more than the bad boy of the gang. Rather, he's a victim of abandonment, growing up without a father and always wondering, deep down, where he comes from.
In Legendaddy, his estranged father comes knocking. Played by the fantastic John Lithgow, Jerome and Barney seem to hit it off despite their estrangement, only for it to be revealed that Barney isn't happy with who his dad has turned out to be. Worse than that, Jerome has a family away from Barney, with a son called Jerome Jr.
This revelation causes Barney to berate his father in one of the show's most surprising moments, as he lays it all on the table and says goodbye, stealing Jerome Jr's basketball hoop and giving it to Ted, wanting Ted's kids to have the childhood he never had.
