15 Best New TV Characters Of The Decade
15. Captain Raymond Holt - Brooklyn-99
After Michael Schur had a hand in the writing and production of The Office, he created three stellar sitcoms in a row: Parks & Recreation, Brooklyn-99 and The Good Place.
With Parks & Rec starting in the previous decade and The Good Place just missing out, Captain Holt is the sole Schur representative, but that shouldn’t undercut just how influential he’s been in comedy this last decade and a half.
Cop shows are nothing new. While the big police procedural boom is over, crime dramas can still be found most nights through the week. Even comedy twists on the genre are not entirely new, but Brooklyn-99 always felt like it was bursting with new ideas.
A huge part of that is the ensemble cast, and so narrowing it down to just one character seems a little unfair. Jake Peralta, Terry Jeffords or Gina Linetti could easily be here instead.
Holt though drives the plot forward and holds the cast together. He also manages to be hilarious while having absolutely zero jokes or even humour, which is must harder than Andre Braugher makes it seem. A fantastic gay character and a brilliant straight man.
