14. The Carnivorous Carnival: Part 1 - A Series Of Unfortunate Events

A Series of Unfortunate Events
Netflix

A Series of Unfortunate Events' second season was a little bit of a mixed bag, once again suffering from too much repetition, but it managed to get out of its familiar pattern by the end thanks to the events of The Horrible Hospital.

That leads the Baudelaires, and us viewers, to The Carnivorous Carnival, which is a perfect setting for this show (and as ever, the production and costume designs are impeccable).

It's quite refreshing to see the children hurtling into danger, rather than the notion of safety being disrupted by the arrival of Count Olaf and his troupe, which gives this a different kind of feel without changing things too much (a difficult but important balance to strike). It's an episode that expertly manages the series' blend of humour and darkness, and most importantly - and intriguingly - gives some key flashbacks that help flesh out the mystery of the VFD, including a host of familiar faces, and offers a thrill in starting to really piece together the puzzle.
