15 Greatest HBO Characters Of All Time

7. Hank Kingsley

Stringer Bell Samantha Jones The Hound
HBO

One of the true pioneering comedies of the '90s, The Larry Sanders show cleared a path for much of what became the modern comedic landscape. A huge influence of Ricky Gervais and a reference point for celeb-driven sitcoms like Curb, the much missed Garry Shandling's magnum opus remains fresh today.

Its finest creation is surely Hank Kingsley, the balding, sycophantic sidekick played perfectly by TV stalwart Jeffrey Tambor. A yes man and a social climber, Hank is your archetypal surface level nice guy – with a bellyful of rage and resentment ready to gush out at any moment.

Given the nuance of Tambor and the writing staff, Hank will ring uncomfortable true to many viewers; moreso even than a George Costanza or a David Brent, Hank Kingsley is the voice of the ordinary buffoon with ideas way above his station.
