An action/sci-fi vet, having appeared in the likes of The Terminator, Aliens, and Apollo 13, Bill Paxton was a great choice to help give Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. a much-needed boost in its flagging debut season.

It's been written many times now how the tie-in with Captain America: The Winter Soldier gave the show a second lease of life, imbuing it with a sense of purpose, a clear place in the MCU, and some narrative momentum to propel it forward.

A big part of that success was Paxton's John Garrett. He was very much the right guy at the right time, and while his run on the show was brief (he only lasted six episodes) it was incredibly memorable and important to the series.

He brought a real sense of energy to the show, his action cred was clear to see, and his smarminess and ego helped provide a necessary counterpoint to the rest of characters.
