Sara's near-fatal drug overdose was intended to be a definitive killer in Season 1. She was meant to die. However, plans changed due to a nudge from the network and the popularity of Tancredi with the fans. Robin Tunney, who played Veronica, was also keen to move on to other productions meaning in the end that the writers were almost forced to write her out which meant Sara had to live. It's hard to imagine the show panning out any other way, with the Michael/Sarah arc playing such a key role, and Veronica's shock death hit the viewers hard too.
