15 Mind-Blowing Facts You Didn't Know About Red Dwarf
9. Kryten Was Named After A Butler
Red Dwarf's resident cleaner was a clever spin on the competent, albeit fictional, butler Crichton. After all, nobody could ever really love ironing THAT much. Performed on stage for the first time in 1902, The Admirable Crichton centred on the behaviour of a butler who was shipwrecked with his employer Lord Loam along with his well to-do family and friends. As the story unfolds Crichton becomes the leader of the group and starts to civilise the island, influencing the behaviour of its new residents and not always for the best. Much like a parallel universe version of the Kryten we know and love today except without the panelled head. Remember the loveable innocence Kryten has during his first appearance in Red Dwarf and how it's almost Peter Pan-esque? The author of both The Admirable Crichton and Peter Pan is... JM Barrie. Now would you like creases in that green jumpsuit, Mr. Pan, Sir?
