15 Most Important Buffy The Vampire Slayer Episodes

11. Passion (Season 2, Episode 17)

Buffy Fool for LOVE SPIKE
Mutant Enemy

Surprise put the Angelus storyline in motion earlier in the season, but it's not until Passion that it becomes clear just how dangerous a soulless Angel can be. Buffy still can't bring herself to kill him, and because of her inability to do what she must, Jenny is killed whilst trying to find a way to save Angel's soul.

In one of the show's most shocking and heart-pounding moments, the teacher is chased through the empty high school, evading Angelus until the last second, when he blindsides her and snaps her neck.

Passion is narrated by Angelus, too, bookending the episode with an iconic, disturbing monologue about love and pain. The entire episode hammers home the fact - to both Buffy and the audience - that Angelus has to die in order for there to be peace amongst Buffy and the gang. It's a heavy watch, and still stands as one of the show's best episodes, but is also vital to understanding the danger Angelus poses and the hardship of Buffy's job as the Slayer.
