15 Most Prominent Game Of Thrones Characters (Yet To Appear In The Show)
3. Jon Connington - 221 Mentions
Arianne's storyline in the Winds of Winter seems set to intertwine with that of Jon Connington and his young charge, Aegon Targaryen, thought by all to have been murdered by Gregor Clegane during Robert's Rebellion. Whether legitimate or an imposter, Aegon seems set to pose a threat to the Iron Throne (as well as Daenerys' if she ever makes a move for it on the page herself), particularly if Dorne rallies behind him and Arianne takes his hand in marriage.
Aegon is still largely an unknown capacity, as he musters only 76 mentions during the chapters that feature him. Much more insight is given into the character of Connington, a former Hand of the King under Aerys Targaryen believed dead but instead recruited by Varys to raise the young Prince. Disgusing themselves as 'Griff' and 'Young Griff' respectively, the two spend a considerable amount of time in the company of Tyrion Lannister once he is recruited to their cause, before his capture at Jorah Mormont's hand sends him to Daenerys' instead.
A somewhat tragic figure given his affliction with Greyscale and guilt over past battles, Connington seeks only to put his charge on the throne and die peacefully in his ancestral home, which is far too pleasant of a wish for George R. R. Martin's vicious world. He and his companions (including Haldon Halfmaester, who clocks in 137 mentions in his own right) obviously have a big part to play in Martin's upcoming literary creations, but none whatsoever on television, where the Targaryen focus is on Daenerys and Daenerys only.
It's hard to say if his omission is a mistake as of yet given how little is still known about him, but given the question marks over whether Aegon is exactly who he is meant to be, it certainly would've been a suspenseful narrative to see played out on screen.
