On screen, the Nights Watch has always been short of named members. This is in stark contrast to the books, where the supporting cast on the Wall has always been quite extensive. It has never really presented a problem to the series, as all of the events that the Watch have been involved in have been simple to depict through the actions of Jon Snow, Samwell Tarly and their small cast of companions, though it was quite strange to see Jon's dead body being guarded by a group of nondescript extras at the beginning of season six given that all of his allies of note were dead or elsewhere by that point.

The most notable member of the Watch to not make the transfer to screen is Donal Noye, a one-armed blacksmith formerly in service to House Baratheon. He effectively serves three purposes - advising Jon upon his arrival at the Wall when his attitude at first alienates his fellow recruits, offering some insight into the contrasts between Robert, Stannis and Renly Baratheon and taking a leading role in the battle against Mance Rayder's Wildling army when they attack the wall, dying to defend one of its tunnels against a giant.

With the first purpose undertaken by Tyrion Lannister, the second rendered unnecessary through the actual depictions of the characters (none of whom were point-of-view characters in the books and are therefore only seen and described second-hand) and the third assumed instead by Jon's fellow recruit Grenn, it's easy to see why Noye was axed. If and when the Wall is revisited as a location on screen, however, it could be a nice shout-out to see him make a cameo appearance given that Dolorous Edd is now the only character of note that remains there.
