15 Times S**t Got Real In Game Of Thrones
2. The Red Wedding
Perfectly set up and horrifically (or beautifully depending on your perspective) paid off, the Red Wedding stands as one of the most notorious moments in the show. Maybe even television history.
In terms of s**t getting real this is a marathon of ordeals. The slow, subtle build dropped hints that saw fans catching on at different times. Catelyn 's doubting realisation of what is happening is extremely painful to watch and seeing from the outside in through Arya's eyes, we see how completely f***ed they are.
Switching perspectives between Arya and her mother rather than offering brief relief from the disgusting betrayal, enhances it to new heights. The rhythm of the scene prevents you from maxing out on horror and threads in enough clarification for your enraged wheels to start spinning in terms of the impact this will have.
Every glimpse of hope is systematically snuffed out. There is no ceremony or pageantry to the deaths of the main characters, only brutal and clinical slaughter.
The betrayal of not only trust but the far more basic and ancient principle of guest right (pledge of protection by your host) is a great indictment of the Cawing worm, Walder Frey.
And it all started with The Rains Of Castamere. Tywin Lannister's personal calling card. This s**t got too real.
