15 Unanswered Lost Questions That Totally Have Explanations
1. Were They Dead All Along?
This one isn't even really an unanswered question, but it's become so prominent in pop culture that it's worth addressing. In the finale, all the main characters are together in some sort of afterlife. Does that mean they were dead all along and they died in the plane crash?
The Explanation: No! Absolutely not. Totally, unequivocally, no. First of all, in the final episode, Christian Shephard clearly explains to Jack that although he and everyone out in the church is dead, "everything that ever happened to you is real."
The idea is that in this purgatory type place the characters meet up in after they've all died, even though they die at different points in time. Jack dies on the island, but Kate and Sawyer probably don't die for several decades.
In that way, the final sequence is like an extreme flashforward, taking place after each character is dead. But everything in the show before this really happened, and they didn't all die in the plane crash. Everyone who left the island probably just died of natural causes many years later.
Though for most of the questions on this list the writers have kept their mouths shut and have not provided much further explanation, they've gone on record as confirming that the characters weren't dead the whole time. So let's finally put that one to rest.
