16 New HBO Series You Need To Get Excited About

1. The Deuce (And Untitled Washington Project)

David Simon is one of the most powerful TV writers around, having unleashed his fury and sense for social injustice on HBO in the likes of Treme, last year's Oscar Isaac starring Show Me A Hero, and of course The Wire, which holds a legitimate claim to being the greatest TV series of all-time.

He's back again in 2016, with yet another topic that, in the hands of anyone else, might not sound all that great, but with him at the helm it's exciting to think just what he'll find to bring to life, in particular the characters he'll create.

The Deuce will star James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal, and centre on the legalisation and rise of the porn industry in New York€™s Times Square from the early 1970s to the mid-1980s. Simon is creating the show alongside his Wire collaborator George Pelecanos, while Michelle McLaren (one of the best TV directors around) will direct the series.

After this, Simon also has another exciting project lined up with HBO, working on a Capitol Hill drama with famed journalist Carl Bernstein. Little else is known about it, but that sentence alone is enough to get excited about.

Before streaming services like Netflix got in on the action, the place to go for genuinely high-quality TV - often starring A-list talent - was HBO.

NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far. A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
