16 Upcoming Netflix Original Series To Be Excited About (That Aren't Marvel)
7. The Crown
The Crown, a 10-part series set to air in November, will tell the story of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, the early days of her marriage to Prince Phillip, forging a relationship with Winston Churchill, and leading the monarchy at a difficult time in its history: "The British Empire is in decline, the political world is in disarray, and a young woman takes the throne....a new era is dawning."
The starry drama comes from writer Peter Morgan, who wrote film The Queen and play The Audience (which won Helen Mirren an Oscar and a Tony respectively for her roles as Elizabeth II), and director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours).
In front of the camera, Claire Foy gets to play another monarch, having played Anne Boleyn in BBC's Wolf hall, while Matt Smith will be Prince Phillip. The rest of the cast includes Vanessa Kirby, Jared Harris, Stephen Dillane, and John Lithgow as Winston Churchill.
Netflix released a sizzle reel of footage earlier in the year, and it looks very impressive, really capturing the period and royal setting, while Foy and Smith particularly shine together.
