8. Michael's Gambit - The Good Place
The Good Place was indeed good right from the off, but it became *great* in its final few episodes, and in particular its season finale.
It's an episode difficult to talk about without spoilers, but the way its constructed makes for a half-hour that is an absolute joy to watch from start to finish. It builds on various threads from throughout the season, piecing together various clues that you may or may not have picked up on, and layers them all together to create a stunningly clever sequence of events that will leave your face a lot like Kristen Bell's in the image above.
The whole cast is on fire in this episode, after a season after gelling together, but what Ted Danson does with his character is particularly surprising and brilliant. There's some incredible chemistry at work here, and the comic timing is perfect. Many shows fail at making a more high-concept sitcom work, but The Good Place always manages to balance that with its character moments, something wholly evident in Michael's Gambit.
It brilliantly caps off Season 1, will have you laughing out loud and genuinely stunned, and you'll be desperate for more immediately.
