7. The Boys (Season 3)

The Boys has always gone for the jugular; this is a show, after all, that paints beloved superheroes as sadistic monsters who happily rape, murder and extort their way to power and prestige, a twist on the genre that's played for laughs as well as a timely portrayal of corruption and inequality.

But season three is easily the show's most relentless and shocking instalment yet, following The Boys as they're scattered, outnumbered, and desperate to bring the indomitable Homelander down before his mental state finally cracks. What stems from this conflict is some of the most grotesque, over-the-top scenes on TV.

Don't take that to mean The Boys lacks tact, though. Under the exploding bodies and sex, the drama pointedly tackles everything from racism to the celebrity, whilst Homelander becomes a more frenzied but beloved figure when he begins to speak his mind. It hits close to home, but you won't look away until its horrific finale.
