7. Garth Of Izaar Freaking Out As Kirk From Whom Gods Destroy (1969)
Starfleet doesn't have the greatest track record with its captains in Kirk's time, does it? They get obsessive, go native, go power-mad, or simply go insane - and that's just Kirk. (Though it could apply to Archer and Janeway, as well...) Seriously, though, between Tracey getting drunk with power in The Omega Glory, Decker going all Captain Ahab in The Doomsday Machine, and Garth of Izar simply going insane in Whom Gods Destroy, you do have to wonder whether there's something in all that Starfleet training that isn't meant for weak-minded individuals. It also makes you wonder how Harriman ever got so far... Whatever it is, not only does it make the captains crazy, it makes them overact in a cringe-making way, as well. That's the only possible explanation for this scene, in which the shapeshifting Garth of Izar, posing as Kirk, is unable to get the Enterprise to drop its shields and beam him aboard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFAgNnXlXTw Yes, we know it's not Kirk we're watching, but it's really rather hard to tell, since this is what Shatner does when he's playing Kirk anyway. This is only one instance, though, of an ongoing problem...
