19. The Capellans' Outfits From Friday's Child (1967)

Ah, Capella. Just as it seems churlish to cringe at something that hadn't been written into the series' bible yet, it seems equally churlish to criticise a series' costumes, especially when said series was made in the '60s. That doesn't keep us from feeling the way we do about the Capellans's outfits from the episode Friday's Child, though. For those who need reminding: the Capellans are a pre-warp culture with an incredibly elaborate set of social rules and a warrior ethic very close to that of the Klingons, who also appear in the episode - or at least, one does. But while the Klingon outfits are not too shabby for that period, the Capellans are...well, just look at them. All those lavender boas. It's like a drag queen competition at the Folsom Street Fair, only without the good dress sense. Costume designer Matt Jeffries generally did a great job, especially with the women's costumes, but this is not one of his finest hours. Special mention goes to the costumes of the Cloud Minders in the eponymous episode - most of the men in that one look like they're wearing full-length gowns. And speaking of bad costuming...
