As a whole, The Walking Dead had a troubled relationship with its characters, often failing to realise their potential (Beth, Carl, Tyreese) or bungle their development entirely (Morgan, mid-series Carol, Andrea). But when they got it right, they ended up with characters like Maggie Greene.

Rick, Daryl, Michonne, Carol, and Negan may be more obvious picks for this list, but Maggie was often the show's secret weapon, a kind young woman who lost her father, sister and husband to a world she was woefully unprepared for, who used her tragic life to become a hardened survivor and community leader.

Watching her lose Hershel, then Beth and then Glenn, you'd be forgiven for thinking Maggie was doomed to a similar fate, but it never came. Despite all the horror and loss and burgeoning grief, Maggie rose to the challenge at every turn, and was all the more compelling and poignantly transformed for it.
