20 Funniest Moments In British Comedy
19. Blue Alert - Red Dwarf
The Show: In the late eighties, science-fiction was simultaneously as popular and as badly produced as it had ever been. The success of certain big budget Hollywood films had unleashed a hunger that television studios simply didn't have the skill or the stomach to replicate. However the BBC stumbled across a winning formula (admittedly after 2 woeful series) with the delightfully low-budget Red Dwarf - a show where by the last man in the universe wakes up after accidentally getting stuck in cryo-sleep for 3,000,000 years.
The Set Up: Our intrepid crew - Lister, the aforementioned last man in the universe; Kryten, a protocol droid who knows nothing but servitude; Cat, the evolutionary ancestor of the ship's actual cat; and Rimmer, the holographically resurrected former-bunkmate of Lister, still clinging to a misplaced sense of duty to the space core he never succeeded with in life - are navigating the trivial challenge of surviving deep space.
They're quite the bunch, and this scene showing them dealing with an unknown threat that not only showcases what every character brings to the dynamic, but contains the best jokes in the entire show.
