One of the most talked about season cliffhangers in TV history, season three of Dallas ended with the man every character hated being shot in his office and left for dead. For eight months everyone was asking who shot JR? His wife? His lover? His brother? There was no shortage of suspects and anticipation was at fever point by the time season four begun; though it would still take four episodes before audiences finally got their answer. Watching this cliffhanger now, it might not be as thrilling as some entries on the list, but it deserves this high ranking purely down to the buzz and excitement it generated. The Simpsons even paid tribute to this TV event by ending their sixth season with a similar cliffhanger - who shot Mr. Burns? Like with JR Ewing, there was no shortage of suspects.
