20 Greatest Season Cliffhangers In TV History

19. Smallville - Season 3 Finale (Covenant)

One of the most ballsy season cliffhangers in TV history, the third season of Smallville went for pure shock value by literally blowing up the kitchen sink. In Lionel Luthor's greatest moment of villainy, everyone set to testify against him is seemingly wiped out; Chloe O'Brien and her dad enter a government safe house which is promptly obliterated in an explosion, Lex collapses in the manor poisoned by his father, while Lionel sits in his cell, his head shaved as his plans come to fruition. With his son seemingly dead, audiences asked - is Lionel the Luthor who opposes Superman, not Lex? But the cliffhangers did not end there. Martha Kent looks on in shock at the mysterious Kryptonian markings burning outside her home, while her husband Jonathan lies unconscious in a cave after a failed attempt to save his son. As for Clark, he is under the control of his father Jor-El, trapped in another dimension. It was an end of season cliffhanger that left audiences' mouths hanging open as they wondered who was dead and who was alive. It would have been higher on the list if only season four of Smallville had followed it up in a satisfactory manner. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNSlPRHA-6M
