17. The One With The Physicists In Minsk

Friends Promo 4
NBC

Again, this feels like a no-brainer, largely because Hank Azaria is so good that he should be in everything.

Before Mike Hannigan came into Phoebe’s life, David was the Mike that nearly was: the love interest that everyone rooted for. Back in the first season, there was no intention of having any of the characters settle down properly; it just wasn’t David and Phoebe’s time.

There’s a world of potential in awkward, sweet and kind David’s character, especially in a fish-out-of-water comedy like An American In Minsk, which details David’s life and relationships while working on an increasingly farcical physics research project in nineties Belarus.

His colleagues are former political dissidents and hippies, his best friend is a barman obsessed with US pop culture and his next door neighbour may be a former KGB agent. As his work gets more and more confusing, weird and Kafkaesque, David tries to navigate life and love in this foreign culture, with the expected clashes and horrendous misunderstandings.
