4. The Red Wedding - Game Of Thrones (Season 3, Episode 9)
The Red Wedding was, until just recently, the most infamous episode in the history of Game of Thrones. Ned Stark dying was one thing, but we were once again shocked as Lord Walder Frey had Robb Stark, his pregnant wife Talisa and Robb's mother Catelyn violently murdered due to Robb breaking a pact to marry one of Frey's daughters after falling in love with Talisa. It's a shocking moment because the tone of the wedding prior to this seems so jovial, and at the moment Catelyn spots Roose Bolton wearing chainmail underneath his clothes, it's clear what's going on. The unflinching brutality is what appears to get most viewers above all else: Talisa is repeatedly stabbed in the womb before dying, Robb is shot with arrows before being stabbed through the heart, and Catelyn has her throat slit (albeit not before slashing the throat of Frey's wife). For anyone who hadn't read the books, it created a phenomenon, with Twitter becoming a venting ground for the shock, while YouTube also proved to be a popular destination for "reaction videos" to the unbelievable moment. As if we needed to be reminded, the Red Wedding firmly reinforced the fact that nobody is ever safe at any time on this show.
