20 Mind-Blowing Facts You Never Knew About George RR Martin

20. He Bloody Loves Wolves

The cast of Game Of Thrones often grow as attached to their pet wolves as their characters. The dog that played Sansa Stark€™s dire wolf, Lady, was even adopted afterwards by actress Sophie Turner. The existence of the dire wolves in the series comes directly from the A Song Of Ice And Fire book series, and because George R.R. Martin loves wolves. Like, for real. But not just in the sense that he has a lot of wolf toys on his desk or he collects funny photos of them (although he almost certainly does both of those things as well). Oh no, Martin is serious about his wolf love, and he tends to treat them a lot better in real life than he does in his books. He and his wife are long-time supporters of the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary in New Mexico, a charity which provides a home for unwanted tame wolves and educates people on them. Martin has offered incentives to get people to donate to the organisation, offering the chance for fans who donated over $20,000 to appear and be killed off in The Winds Of Winter.
