Sally Rooney's Normal People was an international success. The Irish TV adaptation of her 2018 novel reached audiences in the UK and Ireland on BBC Three and RTÉ One but it gained an international following when it landed on Hulu in America. Critical acclaim soon followed, with the show nabbing four Primetime Emmy nominations.
Now, it's her debut novel, Conversations With Friends, that is heading to small screen and it will be produced by the same people that brought Normal People to life, as the show's co-writer Alice Birch will oversee the project while director Lenny Abrahamson will also return to direct. Hulu is also behind this one, meaning that it too is destined to be seen by American audiences.
Conversations With Friends focuses on the relationships among four people - two close poets and an older couple that invites them into their home before things get complicated and begin to spiral out of control.
It sounds like Rooney's knack for writing real human drama could once again translate nicely to the small screen.
