https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjkVgc6gIqk The wisdom of Dale Cooper, admittedly Lynch's on-screen alter-ego, ranges from the enigmatic, to the charming, to the downright bizarre. Amidst all the metaphorical discussion about love, duty, the soul and morality, it's Cooper's simplest piece of advice that rings truest. The sanctity of life and freedom, so scarce and unlikely as it can be, should not be underestimated. Perhaps we do spend too many days of our lives filled with anger, regrets and spite. Perhaps we do need to remind ourselves to enjoy life's pleasures, no matter how small, on a constant basis. In fact, you should give yourself a present right now. All of you. Well, after you've read #1 that is!
1. The Owls Are Not What They Seem
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCf-oiIbVnw The Giant's most quoted, referenced and confusing clue is synonymous with the 'message' of Twin Peaks. In context, a clue to the method in which BOB travels, in reality, the words of Frost & Lynch carry a far greater significance. Owls, often heard but not seen, wise and observant, are not merely the stereotypes we place upon them. The same can be said of the people. Josie Packard is an attempted murderer, Donna Hayward a mistake in her existence, even Dale Cooper at the end, leaves the Lodge not what he initially seems. Thus is the message of Twin Peaks: people are unique individuals, far more diverse than the attributes you apply to them. Anyone is capable of surprising you at any time and that is a good thing. It is a disservice to everyone you know to assume they're all you prescribe them to be. For better or for worse, people are never wholly what they seem, simply because what they seem is what they're trying to seem. Like the characters of Twin Peaks, in the right circumstances, anyone is capable of anything, which is why we shouldn't pigeon-hole ourselves into the idea that we can't do or be something. Now then, that said, go give yourself that present, fellow fan of Twin Peaks!
