20 TV Show Pilots That Are Totally Flawless
5. Give Me A Ring Sometime - Cheers
Written by creators Glen and Les Charles, Give Me a Ring Sometime serves as the perfect opening to a show about people in a bar, fumbling through life and falling in and out of love. It introduces all the main characters like they're old friends to the audience, and brings them together in a sweet, funny and low-key mini-adventure.
The main focus of the episode is Diane Chambers, who gets left by her husband and is offered a job - somewhat out of pity - by bar owner Sam Malone. The build-up to her accepting the job and losing everything of importance in her life is the drive of the pilot, and its comic engine.
Brought to life by a whole host of perfectly cast stars, including Ted Danson as Sam, Shelley Long as Diane, and Rhea Perlman as waitress Carla Tortelli, Give Me a Ring Sometime is surely one of the best sitcom openers ever written, and one that gets more enjoyable with every re-watch.
