20 TV Villain Performances That Are Practically Flawless

2. Ian McShane - Al Swearengen (Deadwood)

Hannibal Lecter Mads
HBO

Deadwood is an absolute goldmine of flawless performances and unforgettable characters, but none are nearly as compelling as Ian McShane and his volcanic portrayal of bar owner and pimp Al Swearengen.

Working wonders to create vulgar poetry out of David Milch's filthy script, McShane plays Swearengen as a man without equal and shame. He's vile, racist, darkly amusing, uncompromising, and yet level-headed, intelligent, and forward-thinking.

With a manipulative streak rivalled by few others on TV, he's a villain with a soft spot, willing to kill for his own gain but also protect those closest to him. McShane sells his intimidating nature, but doesn't shy away from the good man underneath.

From his booming voice, his profane speechifying and his constantly astounding ability to work everyone to his advantage, Swearengen is one of modern TV's finest creations, and McShane was the best actor to bring him to life.
