2013 Emmy Predictions - Drama

Best Drama

breaking bad This is the big one and this year, there looks to be some really tough competition for it. Up to now, Mad Men won the Emmy four times in a row, before losing it to Homeland last year. Who's going to get it this year is anyones guess. For some, Breaking Bad is a likely candidate as it is one of the most acclaimed shows on television and has yet to win the award. This year would be a great chance to reward a show that has consistently upheld quality, skill, and a stellar cast. It would in no way be undeserved. Also likely is Emmy favorite Mad Men, which has already won the award four times previously. It didn't win it last year, and honestly, I can see why. Season 5 was not Mad Men at its best. Keep in mind that even at its worst, Mad Men is still much, much better than the majority of television. However, winning the Emmy that year would've made Mad Men the first show to win it five times consecutively and Season 5 just didn't seem good enough to deserve that distinction. This season, however, has been through the roof amazing and is probably my 3rd favorite season overall. It really deserves another Emmy, but so do a lot of shows. Last year's winner, Homeland, is also a viable candidate. However, the reviews of its second season have shown that it has had a drop in popularity in quality. It still might win, as it takes a while for the shows to fall out of favor with the Emmys, but I sincerely hope not as Mad Men and Breaking Bad have gone above and beyond in showing they deserve it this year. Downton Abbey, Boardwalk Empire and The Good Wife are also fan favorites and though it does seem likely both will be nominated, I highly doubt them winning. This season of Downton Abbey in particular has not gotten the same praise as the previous ones. Boardwalk Empire has actually has a spectacular season, but it has never been an Emmy favorite. House of Cards also seems due a nomination, but I'm hesitant to say it has a chance at winning due it being a Netflix original, which might give it some disfavor with a traditional Emmy judge. One that seems unlikely, but I'm rooting for nonetheless is Game of Thrones. The show has been nominated but has yet to win, most likely due to the more conservative tastes of the judges. I know its unlikely, but this has probably been my favorite season so far and has really pushed the bounds of television. It would be great to see it win an Emmy. My Prediction: Breaking Bad Possible Nominations: Mad Men Homeland Game of Thrones Downton Abbey Breaking Bad The Good Wife Boardwalk Empire
