24 Iconic Moments That Have Defined 24 So Far

11. Edgar Stiles & Lynn McGill Die (Season 5, Episodes 12 & 13)

Edgar Stiles was introduced in season four and quickly became a fan favourite, a rotund but rather likeable CTU employee who frequently clashed with Chloe. In season five, he unexpectedly met his end when Sentox nerve gas was pumped into CTU, and Edgar was not able to make it into the situation room in time before it was locked down. As a result, all anyone could do was look on as Edgar slowly expired from the nerve gas, resulting in one of 24's saddest moments, and another silent clock for a fallen, beloved character. In the fallout of that attack, Lynn McGill, the douchey Regional District Director of CTU played by Samwise Gamgee himself, is one of the survivors. However, the nerve gas being released was essentially partly his fault, due to him failing to report that his swipe card had been stolen earlier in the day. Furthermore, with the building's protective seals beginning to fail, someone needed to re-activate CTU's ventilation ducts in order to save the remaining employees. Being in the room closest to the console and feeling a certain responsibility for the day's events, Lynn sacrifices himself to turn the vents back on, expiring shortly after doing so. Lynn may not have had the same sort of emotional redemption as George Mason or Ryan Chappelle, but he still went out a hero.

10. Tony Almeida "Dies" (Season 5, Episode 13)

As if enough people hadn't died in the unremittingly grim fifth season of 24, Tony Almeida was the next beloved character on the chopping block. Tony is sealed inside CTU Medical with an unconscious Christopher Henderson (yes, Robocop!) while the nerve gas is released inside the building. Tony, aware that Henderson caused Michelle's death, plans to inject Henderson with a fatal overdose of drugs, only for Henderson to awaken as he hesitates, grab Tony and administer the injection to him instead. Henderson escapes, and Jack quickly discovers Tony, cradling his corpse as the episode ends, to the horror of Soul Patch fans everywhere. However, the fact that Tony didn't get a silent clock stumped many viewers, and was explained with his unexpected resurrection in season seven, which we'll get to in a few moments...
