24's producers, directors and show-runners have always had a pretty hands-on relationship with their fanbase, and this was evidenced no better than in season four. In the fifth episode, Debbie Pendleton's (played by the now-famous Leighton Meester) phone rang with a very real Californian phone number, which if called would usually go through to a voice-mail message asking the viewer to leave their own message. However, if the phone was called during shooting, often cast and crew members would pick up to talk to fans. Apparently the phone received 80,000 calls within a week of the episode airing, and was the brainchild of the show's producer and frequent director Jon Cassar, after he frequently became bored scouting locations for the show.
