As the clubs most spontaneous decision-maker, Tig Trager had spent several seasons trying to dig himself out from under the weight of his murder of Opies wife, Donna. When Opie shot Clay near the end of the shows fourth season, Tig was tricked into thinking the attempted murder was the result of a One-Niner drive-by and set out for vengeance against their leader Laroy, only to run down Laroys girlfriend Veronica instead. Unfortunately for Tig and the club, Veronicas father, Damon Pope, was Oaklands most powerful criminal kingpin. After making Tig watch his own daughter burn to death, Pope wasnt content to let the score settle at an eye for an eye. When Jax, Tig, Chibs and Opie were taken to prison at the beginning of the fifth season, Pope forced Jax to sacrifice one of his friends, a burden Jax decided to shoulder himself before Opie stepped in, forcibly taking his place and giving his life while the surviving trio had to watch. Even then, Pope did not stop, demanding a cut of the clubs profits and putting a ticking clock over Tigs head. By seasons end, Jax seemingly gave Tig over to Pope, only to double-cross Pope, save Tig and frame Clay for Popes murder. Jaxs outsmarting of the otherwise astute Pope is one of the series most cheer-worthy moments and his death one of the most gratifying.
