13. No More Fourth Wall - Fleabag

Phoebe Waller Bridge Fleabag
BBC

Fleabag revolves around the title character (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) dealing with the suicide of her friend Boo (Jenny Rainsford), who walked herself into traffic.

In the final episode, however, it's revealed that Fleabag had sex with Boo's boyfriend, the very event which caused her to take her own life.

When Fleabag is confronted about this fact, she flashes back to the incident. While throughout the show she frequently breaks the fourth wall and talks to the audience, this time she finds herself failing to maintain eye contact, her glances fleeting constantly as though she feels the audience judging her actions also.

It's a terrific work of writing, direction and acting, and given the information it tells us about the troubled protagonist, is very, very messed up.
