3. "Hold The Door" - Game Of Thrones

Hodor Game Of Thrones

Tommen's suicide wasn't the biggest shock of Game of Thrones' sixth season, as the fifth episode revealed the tragic origin story of Hodor (Kristian Nairn).

Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) is being pursued by the wights, at which point he splits his consciousness in two, entering the past while also warging into Hodor in the present.

Hodor then closes the door while Bran and Meera (Ellie Kendrick) escape, resulting in his death as Meera instructs him to "hold the door".

Back in the past, Bran can't handle the consciousness split and unintentionally wargs into young Hodor (a stable boy named Wylis), causing Hodor to begin shouting "hold the door", which eventually merges into the iconic "hodor", the only phrase he can say from that point.

It's an absolutely shattering explanation of why Hodor is the way he is, giving the character a doubly devastating end while you also probably hate Bran because of it.
