25 Greatest Characters Across The Entire Whedonverse

16. Gunn

charles-gunnAppeared in: Angel Charles Gunn looked to be a one-note character when he was first introduced to Angel viewers in the show's first season, complete with Wesley ducking when hearing the character's name aloud for the first time, but the character was able to grow past that thanks to solid writing by the Mutant Enemy team and a fantastic portrayal by J. August Richards, who would later have a recurring role in Whedon's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Gunn was the street-tough token black character at first glance, but he soon became the soul of the show, and his struggles - with his past, and with what his place on the Angel Investigations team was - are what made the character into a compelling one to watch. For Gunn, as it was with most of the case, the second season story arc in the magical realm of Pylea is where things really took off for the character - and you seen his character development greatly sped up after that.
