25 Most Hotly Anticipated New TV Shows Of 2018

11. Counterpart

Counterpart JK Simmons
Starz

Who? Justin Marks (creator); J.K. Simmons, Olivia Williams, Harry Lloyd.

What? A sci-fi thriller in which Howard Silk (Simmons) plays a lowly worker in a UN agency, coming towards the end of a life he regrets when he discovers their big secret: the agency is guarding a crossing to a parallel dimension. There he meets his counterpart.

Why? Marks is a promising talent, evidenced by his work on Disney's The Jungle Book (and being brought back for the sequel), and he's got another excellent cast to work with here. Simmons is always worth watching anyway, but as an espionage thriller with a sci-fi twist this should be engaging material for him to sink his teeth into, especially as it aims to explore themes around identity, what ifs, and lost loves.

When & Where? 28 January, Starz (the first episode was aired in early December, but the strange release schedule means an almost two-month gap before the season resumes and airs the majority of its episodes).

NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far. A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
